In order to ensure the future livability of our communities in the face of the existential threat of the climate crisis, the Baltimore City Green Party will deliver this petition calling for an immediate ban on new fossil fuel infrastructure to City Hall ahead of the 2020 General Election. In addition to a ban on all new fossil fuel infrastructure, we call for a sunset date of 2032 for all existing fossil fuel infrastructure to be converted to more sustainable uses or dismantled. Baltimore City government’s continued permitting of private fossil fuel infrastructure and expansion of public infrastructure is a form of climate denialism, and it must end!
By signing this petition you join a growing number of Baltimore City residents demanding that the Mayor, City Council, and all City agencies work toward divestment from and prohibition of new fossil fuel infrastructure in the City of Baltimore. This includes:
- banning the zoning and construction of gasoline refineries, gasoline or natural gas shipping terminals, and new gas stations;
- banning waste incineration and other destructive energy production methods;
- divesting City funds from any investment fund profiting from oil, gas, or fossil fuels corporations.
While precise details and exact timelines must necessarily be the business of legislation and policy implementation, creating, signing, and delivering this petition puts Baltimore City government on notice that we will no longer accept incremental steps in the face of the overwhelming danger posed by the climate crisis. Baltimore City must make a clean break with fossil fuels starting now.
To the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City:
We, the undersigned residents of Baltimore, demand a ban on all new fossil fuel infrastructure and a 2032 sunset date on all existing fossil fuel infrastructure.
